On October 20,2009 my husband had streptococcus pneumoniae bacterial meningitis. My husband was never expected to survive, thrive, or regain as much as he has. He will never be the person whom he was before his illness.
I can relate to the memory problems and how scared I was with the many memory issues he experiences. Sometimes he can find the correct word for something but not always. I have to supply the words he can't come up by stabbing around the vocabulary he has at the moment to reach the word he can not find. Many days it is a hunt and search mission to communicate. But, not always. We have good days and bad days. He has balance issues, so therefore he falls over at times. He goes out in public in a scooter because we can't afford for anyone to barely brush by him and get him off balance. Through time, we have learned to enjoy the good days and not fret so much over the bad ones. MS and a host of other issues we fear to discuss has been brought to the table to warn of us of all we might face someday. Unfortuntely within five months of his onset, seizures made a appearance into his life. Two Months ago we found out his thyroid has stopped producing. In December 2011 an optical issue was discovered which we did not know of. We fear everytime he gets pneumonia, which has been at least every 7-9 months since he had meningitis.
Everytime we have any issue whatsoever- Our neurologist would like him to visist the ER. According to the neurologist, a fever is a great concern to us and we should get to the ER. That is easier said than done. In the beginning, we went to the ER for everything. In the begining it was numerous times a month, but the recent issues have been months apart. I do not know if we are facing less issues or we are getting accustom to more and more of the symptoms and we are not as scared about what lies ahead anymore.
I hope my response heloed you a bit. I know through the journeys we are on, there is very few people, in any, in our midst whom has any clue concerning menigitisi. I hope that you will post updates
